About Us
At Build Current, we believe development should be equitable, practical, and bold—grounded in local knowledge and built through lasting public-private partnerships. Our mission is simple: to make a good quality of life more affordable for people.
We collaborate with public agencies, nonprofits, and private developers to deliver projects that reflect community priorities while leveraging innovative financing and renewable energy integration.
Build Current was founded by Alexander Kurtz Mendelson, who brings nearly a decade of experience in affordable housing and renewable energy development. His work spans more than $220 million in affordable housing projects—including LIHTC redevelopments, mixed-use communities, and public-private partnerships with housing authorities across the East Coast—as well as community solar and battery storage projects in Illinois, New York, and the Mid-Atlantic.
Alex has led efforts ranging from securing entitlements and structuring complex financial transactions to negotiating acquisitions and managing development teams. Prior to founding Build Current, he worked with SAA | EVI on affordable housing developments across multiple states and with TurningPoint Energy and RWE Clean Energy on distributed generation solar and storage portfolios.
He holds a BA in Urban Studies from Vassar College and a MS in Real Estate Development from Columbia University, where he founded the Affordable Housing Development and Finance Club in 2018.
